– A Sig Blessing

Last November I was privileged to attend the City of Burnaby and Burnaby Board of Trade’s Business Excellence Awards. There were a number of categories and all the nominees appeared to be worthy recipients for the way they have contributed to Burnaby’s economy, community spirit, business leadership and overall quality of life.  It was an entertaining evening, which I expected.  The highlight of the evening was learning about Glentel, a Burnaby- based telecommunications company that was inducted into the Burnaby Business Hall of Fame.

In his acceptance speech Glentel’s Chairman, President and CEO Tom Skidmore told the audience about the compass of success that had guided Glentel to its amazing growth across North America. He ended with this poem credited to Mother Theresa:

Mother Teresa’s Anyway Poem

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered;
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

This was not what I was expecting at a business dinner. For a people-pleaser like me, it is immensely helpful to be reminded that we will rarely please everyone – but with this guide, we will please the One who matters for eternity.
